Course Information

ENG 113        Introduction to Academic English I

This is a non-credit course compulsory for the students who passed the English prep school proficiency exam on the condition that they take supplementary courses during the first semester along with the Freshman English course taught in their departments. The main objective of this course is to support students with academic foundation skills so that they can easily follow their departmental courses without major difficulties. The course aims at developing students in the four language skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) in an integrated and meaningful manner, as well as in the critical thinking skills which the student will need throughout their academic life. To this end, the course provides students with the ability to read independently, listen effectively, think critically, discuss communicatively, and write properly, with special emphasis on the appropriate use of language structure and vocabulary. Students’ performance at the end of the semester will be assessed on the basis of ‘S’ (satisfactory) or ‘U’ (unsatisfactory) grading system and students will not be able to graduate unless they score ‘S’ in this course.
